Training
“The compassionate and practical response of the [support workers] to my distress was immensely helpful in dealing with such an unexpected and upsetting experience…. I want to commend the GVPVS staff and volunteers for their fine work and both their kindness and understanding extended to me and my children during the very difficult aftermath of a crisis. As time goes by, the early support immediately following the event, has served as a good foundation for healing and recovery.”
Volunteers participate in an extensive training program, composed of three phases
Phase 1 is 70 hours of classroom training, held over a 8 week period covering a wide range of topics:
GVPVS policies, procedures and mandate
Criminal justice system – from arrest to trial
Victim trauma response
Crisis orientation
Domestic Violence
Sexualized violence
Sudden death and suicide
Conflict Resolution
Role of the Coroner
Crime Victim Assistance program and Victim Impact Statements
Peace bonds and restraining orders
Community agency referrals
Communication skills
Role Play simulations*
Self care
Police radio procedures
* The use of simulations and role plays are an essential element; they are scheduled throughout the training for the purpose of practicing learned skills and receiving feedback on strengths and areas to work on. We use them to give volunteers an idea of the types of calls one can expect. Some people are nervous about doing role playing but these are an excellent learning opportunity — and even fun!
Phase 2 is Mentoring. New volunteers will be teamed with an experienced volunteer for a period of 3 months where they will receive orientation and coaching/ mentoring to develop skills and comfort working with clients.
Phase 3 is the completion of the required 200 hour minimum commitment.
Volunteers are expected to commit to:
1. A minimum of one 3 hour shift per week in our office
2. Minimum 6 hours of shifts per month ‘On Call’ availability after office hours
3. Attend one advance training session a year
4. Attend a minimum of 3 of the scheduled volunteer meetings per year
5. Make a minimum program commitment of 200 hours (approximately 1.5 year commitment)
