Services

Greater Victoria Police Victim Services are available to the public Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am – 8:00 pm and Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Access to our services comes through police referrals, other agency referrals and self referrals by phone or walking into our office.  We are located at 850 Caledonia Avenue in the Victoria Police Headquarters building.

Our services include:

Crisis Call Response

  • Assessment at the scene; emotional support; provide information and referral for victims, witness or others who may be traumatized by crime or other events

Emotional Support/Service Referral

  • We have a protocol agreement with four community-based victim services to engage in proactive referrals:  Victoria Women’s Sexual Assault Centre; Spousal Assault Support Program; Mary Manning Centre for Prevention of Child Abuse; and Men’s Trauma Centre
  • We provide follow up and on-going support following a criminal or traumatic event

Court Support

  • Working with Crown Counsel in Victoria and West Shore
  • Orientation to the justice system and court process
  • Attend court with victims, witnesses, family and friends to provide support
  • On-going one-on-one support through the judicial process for victims, witnesses, friends and family

Victim Notification

  • Provide updates for victims who request information on a criminal conviction relating to their experience as a victim of crime; such as court dates, sentencing, parole hearings, parole granted, release dates, conditions of release, etc.

Safety Planning

  • Assist individuals to review and plan for ongoing safety following a criminal victimization

Emotional Support regarding Next of Kin Notification

  • Accompany police on a next-of-kin notification and provide emotional support and referral

Assistance with Victim Impact Statements

  • Provide guidance on what information is required to correctly complete the statement

Assistance with Victim of Crimes Assistance Application

  • Provide guidance in completing the application correctly and concisely

Public Education

  • Victim rights, supports and services available
  • Orientation to justice system and court process
  • Currently targeting seniors, First Nation/Aboriginal communities and new Canadians in the Capital Region
